About Dillard's
In
its 1999 Annual Report, Dillard's states that it is "the largest
name in fashion apparel retailing, with 342 stores in 29 states,"
and revenues "exceeding $8.9 billion."
According to a 1994 Wall Street Journal article,
William Dillard, the company's founder, was described as "A
patient, cunning deal maker who cares deeply about the public image
of him and his chain." However, this same article noted that
the company has "A long history of strife between the company
and minority groups, " citing discrimination lawsuits and unreturned
phone calls from Dillard's executives to NAACP officials and financial
analysts.
